Why I Do This

I want you to meet Jonathan!

That’s him over to the right.  Now there are a variety of reasons I run Hardball Business.  I love meeting new people, I love making money and most of all I love business and watching my clients totally transform their businesses and lives (no, seriously it’s cool as hell when a client makes a boatload of money from a strategy you taught them).  But if you watched the video on the homepage you know that money was never meant to make you happy, for that you need purpose in life.  Money will make you comfortable but what do you do once you have comfort?  That’s where purpose becomes really important.

If you’ll give me about 5 minutes I’d love to tell you about Jonathan and how he and his family and his family came into my life.

A few years ago I used to use a mailbox collection place (kinda like a Mailboxes Etc.) and got to know the owner of the place, Tom, pretty well.  He was a fellow business owner and entrepreneur. Really nice, soft-spoken guy who was always glad to see you and would take care of you any way he could. One of those people that you enjoyed seeing every day.

In 2007 his son, Jonathan, was diagnosed with Pancreatoblastoma cancer. There are only 200 known cases in the world. Tom’s business and life came to an abrupt halt that day.  Tom decided to close up shop and take care of his son and his family.

Now, you probably don’t know this but if a “mail collection or mailbox” place goes out of business there’s really no recourse for the people who have their mail sent there.  They literally have to contact everyone that mails them and tell them their new address.  So I understood that Tom’s clients were annoyed.  But here’s the part that truly shocked me.  No one took a minute to ask about Tom and what happened.  No one asked why he suddenly closed shop or why the color from his face was completely gone and the energy drained from his body.  In fact, they were busy jumping down his throat about what was going to happen to their mail now!  Had humanity sunk to the level that nothing was as important as their damn mail?

I remember sitting there with Tom asking how I could help.  There didn’t seem to be much that I could do but I felt a kindred connection with him.  I couldn’t imagine anything more difficult in the world than hearing that your child is ill.

For the next few years the Jonathan and his family fought through surgery after surgery and Jonathan was nothing shy of a trooper! In his mother’s words, “Jonathan was an amazing child. He was sassy, feisty, comical, and so affectionate.”

After a valiant fight, Jonathan passed away in 2009. He was only 7 years old. His mother Lisa vowed to make sure that she would do anything she could to help children who were sick, hungry, lacking shelter, etc. It doesn’t matter what they need. If there is a child in need she will do whatever she can to help.

The doctors, surgeons and research facilities will always be working to find a cure.  What Jonathan’s Journey is all about is raising funds to bring joy to the faces of terminally ill children.  Whether it’s bringing them a new Lego set (one of Jonathan’s favorites) or throwing a party around their bed, that’s what Jonathan’s Journey is all about.

This is something that’s near and dear to my heart and with every product or service you take advantage of you get the true BONUS of knowing you are also help bring a smile to a child who needs it.
